A residential development comprising four blocks of 30-story building with one level of basement is proposed in a site of area around 2500 m2 in Yuen Long,Hong Kong.The site is located in Scheduled Area No.2 & No.3 as defined in the Fifth Schedule of the Buildings Ordinance(BO,1993).In Scheduled Area No.2,complex geology of karastic marble bedrock with large cavities may be encountered.The site is also adjacent to the West Rail - Long Ping Station(Scheduled Area No.3)and there are special requirements to safeguard the safety and stability of the railway structures.Under the complex site and geological conditions,stringent planning,design and construction of the building have been adopted.This paper describes the investigation,design and construction of the foundations of the proposed building.Detailed discussions on the ground investigation,foundation selection,construction difficulties and performance review of the as-built foundations are presented.
