A Novel Nutrient-based Approach in Controlling Metastasis and Other Key Mechanisms of Cancer

  Tumor metastasis is a major reason for treatment failure in cancer patients.Melanoma is one of the types of cancer that most frequently metastasize, especially in the lung, but also in other organs.Current therapies are ineffective with a high level of toxicity and mortality.We developed a unique nutrient mixture (NM) consisting of lysine, proline, ascorbic acid, green tea extract and other selected nutrients which has demonstrated a powerful anti-tumor effects in about 30 different cancer cell lines in vitro and in vivo.This nutrient mixture was effective in complete inhibition of cancer cells Matrigel invasion, MMP secretion, cell proliferation and it exhibited strong anti-angiogenic and pro-apoptotic properties.In addition, it was effective in inhibition of B16F0 melanoma cells metastasis to the lungs and liver.We have demonstrated that: 1/Pulmonary colonization of melanoma was reduced to 63% in mice fed NM-enriched diet compared to control group.Inhibition of pulmonary colonization was more pronounced in mice receiving MN by ip and iv injections compared to dietary supplementation.In these mice the metastasis was reduced by 86% (p=0.0001).2/Melanoma cells liver metastasis in mice fed NM-enriched diet was reduced by 41% (p=0.0007) and tumor growth in the spleen was lower by 36% (p=0.02).The Kaplan-Meier survival curve indicated that NM dietary treatment resulted in an increase of the mean survival time by 1.5 days compared to mice kept on a regular diet and it resulted in a maximum survival time of 22 days (5 days longer than observed for control mice).
