Highly selective K+ channels play a key role in regulation of cellular excitability and electrolyte homeostasis. It was previously thought that ion selectivity of K+ channels, which is mainly determined by the selectivity filter, does not change in response to physiological stimuli. However, recent studies indicate that two-pore domain K+ (K2P) channels, the newest subfamily of K+ channels, change ion selectivity and permeability in response to physiological or pathophysiological stimuli, demonstrating a new mechanism that regulates cellular function.
