In holometabolous insects, the larval midgut tissues are degraded and replaced by the pupal counterparts during metamorphosis. In addition to the morphologic transformation, midgut usually goes through significant changes in various metabolic pathways. To explore the dynamics of the glycolysis-TCA pathway during the midgut metamorphosis, the genes involved in the glycolysis-TCA pathway were identified from the Spodoptera litura transcriptome, the mRNA levels in different developmental stages and in response to hormonal inductions were examined using real-time quantitative PCR to study the regulation mechanisms.
