Electrochemical capacitors (ECs) (also called supercapacitors or ultracapacitors) with the characteristics of both huge energy and power densities, have been widely used as auxiliary devices of rechargeable batteries.1,2 Due to their different charge storage mechanisms, ECs can be categorized as electric double-layer capacitors (EDLCs) and pseudocapacitors.For pseudocapacitors, Faradaic redox reactions are involved during the charge-discharge processes, while no charge transfer occurs between the interlayer of electrode and electrolyte for EDLCs.3 As an important type of electrode materials for pseudocapacitors, various MnO2 products have been continuously studied in our laboratory because of their high theoretical specific capacitance, low cost, abundance and environmentally friendly nature, as well as the multiple oxidation states of Mn.
