We investigate the 2008 Damxung earthquake on the Tibetan Plateau. The main objectives of this research are (i) to derive a coseismic slip model in a layered elastic Earth; (ii) to characterise afterslip from postseismic time series; (iii) to test whether afterslip is spatially and temporally correlated with aftershocks. We process Envisat SAR data to produce coseismic and postseismic interferograms. An elastic homogeneous half-space is a common choice when inverting coseismic displacements for distributed slip.Only a few researchers have considered crustal layering. Here,we first inverted for both uniform and distributed slip on a rectangular plane in an elastic half-space.The slip is buried beneath ~ 5 km,with a maximum slip of 2.21 m at a depth of 8.5 km.Next we built a simple model with an upper sedimentary layer above an elastic half-space.Using Wang’s software EDGRN/EDCMP,we employed a nonlinear Monte Carlo inversion method to solve for fault parameters, and a distributed slip model was also obtained. The maximum slip value is smaller (2.04 m) than that determined from the homogeneous crustal model (2.21 m).We also present postseismic InSAR data and preliminary results of an inversion for afterslip, which we compare with the coseismic slip distribution. In addition we show relocated aftershocks, and investigate their relationship with the coseismic and postseismic slip.
