Nearly 10,000 SSRs have been identified in peanut by various research groups around the world. In a recent comprehensive review of such markers, we found that only 14.5% of SSRs detected polymorphism in peanut germplasm. This paucity of polymorphic genetic markers in peanut has severely limited the use of marker-assisted selection (MAS) in peanut breeding programs.
