Changes in respiratory metabolism of Calliptamus italicus at different temperatures

  Calliptamus italicus(Orthoptera: Acrididae)is a serious pest in arid and semi-arid grasslands of XinjiangProvince,north-eastern China,and its outbreaks are closely related to climate warming of Xinjiang since the 1980s.This paper explores the effect of temperature increasing on respiratory metabolism of C.italicus.We measured the respiratory rate,metabolic rate,CO2 release rate,Q10 and respiratory quotient in adult C.italicus by using Sable Systems at five different temperatures(15 ℃,20 ℃,25 ℃,30 ℃ and 35 ℃).The values at 15 ℃ were significantly lower than those at the other temperatures(P <0.01),but the values at 35 ℃ were significantly higher(P<0.01),which indicated that temperatures below 15 ℃ and over 35 ℃ both have impact on C.italicus.The values measured from 20 ℃ to 30 ℃ were not significantly different(P>0.01),indicating that this temperature range is optimal for C.italicus development.The values of respiration rate(Q10)reached a maximum(2.42)in the temperature range of 25 ℃‐35 ℃,and its minimum(1.03)between 20 ℃ to 30℃,which shows that the latter temperature range was the optimum for C.italicus development.The results indicate that the frequency of C.italicus outbreak will increase with climate warming in Xinjiang.
