The cuticle of insects is covered with a layer of lipids including long-chain hydrocarbons. These hydrocarbons serve as a waterproofing cuticular layer and function extensively in chemical communication. In Drosophila melanogaster cuticular pheromones consist of unsaturated hydrocarbons with at least one double bond in position 7.Males produce two main pheromones, 7-tricosene (7-T; C23:1) and 7-pentacosene (7-P; C25:1).The main mature female hydrocarbons are longer, 7,11-heptacosadiene (7,11-HD; C27:2) and 7,11-nonacosadiene (7,11-ND; C29:2).
