Previous studies showed that the patterns of eye movements reflect reading strategies and thus could predict individual differences of reading skill for readers of alphabetic language.However,no study of this kind has been reported for a totally different writing system such as Chinese.In the current study,we explored whether eye movement patterns of Chinese readers could reflect their reading strategy and whether they could predict reading comprehension performance.We monitored Chinese readers eye movements when they read a multiple-paragraph,multiple-topic expository text.We analyzed first-pass reading time,second-pass reading time,and regression-out and regress-in probabilities on different regions of text.Based on these eye movement indexes,we categorized participants into three categories using clustering method.These three categories have apparently different eye movement pattern and most importantly they differed in their performances in the Chinese Achievement Test of the College Entrance Examination.These results suggest that eye movement patterns reflect individual differences of reading skill in Chinese reading.
