Stylosanthes (Stylo), a dominating legume found in the tropics and subtropics, adapts well to acidic soils where aluminum (Al) toxicty is a major limiting factor for plant growth. However, physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying Al tolerance in stylo remain unkown. In this study, exudated organic acids were assayed in two stylo genotypes contrasting in Al tolernace.Subsquently, proteomic analysis was conducted to identify the differentially responsive proteins involved in the Al stress response.Increased citrate exudation was observed in both stylo genotypes under Al toxic conditions. However, enhanced malate exudation by Al toxicity was found only in Al tolerant genotype, TPRC2001-1.Through proteomic analysis, a total of 26 proteins were identified to be differentially responsive to Al toxicity in the roots of TPRC2001-1.
