  In this paper, microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) of shikimic acid from star anise, one of well-known Chinese herbs, was studied.The effects of some parameters on the shikimic acid yield were investigated.The yield ofshikimic acid under the optimal extraction condition (microwave power: 500 W, ethanol concentration: 40%, extraction temperature: 100℃, extraction time 50 min, solvent to material ratio: 40 ml/g, and powder size: 60 mesh) was 43.1 mg/g.Compared to traditional heat reflux extraction method, the MAE process significantly reduced extraction time, and a higher extraction yield of shikimic acid could be obtained.This suggested that MAE was a promising method for extraction of effective compounds from star anise as well as other Chinese herbs.
