High-speed counter-current chromatography (HSCCC) is a separation technique based on the partition of solutes between two immiscible liquid phases.The technique has been widely used in the separation and purification of natural compounds from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).In order to obtain an organic/aqueous 2-phase system suitable for HSCCC, the polarities of the solvents chosen must differ significantly making separation of polyphenols very difficult.N-butanol-water is one of the most polar solvent systems for polyphenols separation.However, the low retention of the stationary phase (lower than 50%) has a negative effect on resolution.Recently, the demand for separation of polyphenols with high polarity has led to the need of alternative solvent systems.
