Parkinsons disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder of unknown etiology.PD is caused by the progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons and is characterized by cytoplasmic inclusions known as lewy bodies in the substantia nigra.α-Synuclein (α-SN) has been postulated to play a central role in the pathogenesis of PD, alzheimers disease (AD), and other neurodegenerative disorders.
