The Registry of Congenital Malformations of Alsace is the only population-based registry from northeastem France. The covered population concerns infants born from mothers living in the region and giving birth in Alsace. The overall population is about 1 million 800,000 inhabitants. The average number of births is 13,800 births per year in the Bas-Rhin and 9,000 births per year in the Haut-Rhin, which corresponds to approximately 3% of all births in France. The registration concerns congenital malformations and/or chromosomal anomalies among livebirths (anomaly detected during the pregnancy or after birth up to the 24th month of life of the child), stillbirths after 22 weeks of amenorrhea (SA) and terminations of pregnancy (whatever the term of pregnancy). This study concerned only the department of Bas-Rhin between 1995 and 2009.During these 15 years, a total of 192,391 births were registered. The prevalence of congenital anomalies was 33 per 1000 total births dividing in 79 % of livebirths, 1% of stillbirths and 20 % of terminations of pregnancy.Chromosomal abnormalities represented 13 % of all cases.Down syndrome was the most frequent chromosomal anomalies (51% of all chromosomal anomalies) with a repartition of 30 % of livebirths, 1% of stillbirths and 69 % of terminations of pregnancy.Detailed data concerning prenatal diagnosis for Down syndrome, orofacial clefts and spina bifida were presented.
