Nutritional effect of marine collagen supplementation in postoperative patients

  The purpose of this study was to evaluate the supplemental effect of marine collagen peptide in clinical nutrition support in postoperative patient.The subjects were recruited from a group of patients that underwent gastroenterological surgery and were divided into two groups.Patients of the experimental (A) group were under regular therapy and enteral nutrition support with marine collagen peptide, while patients of the control (B)group were without marine collagen.All patients went though a medical examination(in cluding weight, upper-arm circumference, waistline, hipline and level of total protein, albumin, prealbumin, transferring, C-reactive protein, IgG, IgM, IgA, and total lymphocyte count)on both the 2nd and 7th day af ter surgery.Average hospitalization days of both groups were also compared.The result showed that the re duced weight, upper-arm circumference and hipline from patients in the test group were significantly less than that of control group.The serum levels of albumin ,prealbumin, transferring, IgG, IgM and total lym phocyte count were significantly restored in the test group as compared with that of the control group.Group A had an average hospital stay of 17.1±5.9 days and group B, 20.7±8.7 days.The supplementation of marine collagen peptide in enteral nutritional support proved to be more effective than the enteral nutri tion alone in postoperative patients.
