It is widely accepted that supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is superior to normal phase liquid chromatography (LC).The major pharmaceutical companies have adopted SFC as the method of choice for resolutions of chiral mixtures.Most such resolutions employ normal phase solvents on chiral stationary phases (CSPs).These solvents (alkanes, lower alcohols, acetonitrile, inter alia) are expensive to purchase, fire hazards, toxic, difficult to remove from sample, and incur high disposal costs.When one employs SFC these considerations are reduced by sixty to ninety-nine percent (typically eighty percent) since one replaces that relative amount of organic solvent in the mobile phase with liquid carbon dioxide.Liquid carbon dioxide is inexpensive, available in large amounts, safe to use, easily removed from samples, and there is no disposal cost.It is a byproduct of fermentation, fossil fuel consumption, and many industrial and chemical processes.It is a factor in global warming.Any process that can reasonably use such a material can be said to be "green", so the term "Green Chromatography" is often applied to SFC in the sense of"Green Chemistry".
