Hypertrophic scars and keloids are elevated lesions which are caused in human skin by trauma, surgery or burns, although the details are still unknown.Complete response with a single therapy is difficult, and treatment depends on combinations of multiple therapies, including oral or topical steroids, silicone attachment, oral tranilast, compression therapy, surgical treatment, and electron beam radiation therapy.We used saireito for patients with hypertrophic scars or keloids, and efficacy was observed with improvement in all cases.In addition, there were no adverse drug reactions.Saireito consists of shosaikoto and goreisan, and a 9-gram daily dose contains 6 grams the powdered extract of a mixture of twelve crude drugs.Among them, saireito has anti-inflammatory effects.A feature of saireito is that it is not contraindicated in women during pregnancy or lactation, although careful administration is required.Its usefulness can be expected in the case group which requires ongoing oral therapy.We report representative cases.
