The suicide rate in Flanders was found to be higher than the European average.The preparation of the Suicide Prevention Action Plan started in 2002 with a health conference on the prevention of depression and suicide.The goals where in line with the WHO mental health objectives: to increase mental health and to reduce the suicide rate.Based on evidence from the literature, exemplary action plans in other European countries and WHO recommendations, the Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2006-2010 was elaborated.5 strategies were defined with the goal to decrease by 10 % the predicted suicides by 2010, which translated to a standardized 8 % decrease from baseline measurements in 2000.
