Background,Motivation and Objective We have recently performed a study where what we term the average phase derivative(APD) of the RF data was successfully used to assess carotid plaque vulnerability. The APD is a time domain measure of the backscattered central frequency but without any trade off in time-frequency resolution like the FFT,which enables a more accurate estimation. The fact that scatter properties affect the frequency content of the backscattered data has been confirmed both theoretically and practically by several groups using spectrum analysis. However since the APD is a measure of the center frequency only, the effect of scatter properties in the tissue is unclear. In this study we investigated the relationship between APD and scatter size.
