Regular Papanicolaou (Pap) cytological screening has successfully reduced the U.S.cervical cancer prevalence rate to one of the lowest in the world in spite of a rising trend in other sexually transmitted diseases.Now, cervical cancer in the U.S.is primarily a disease among women who have not received regular Pap screenings or whose Pap tests have not been properly performed.For developing countries where cytology-based screening is unavailable and cervical cancer is still a major lethal malignancy, inexpensive human papillomavirus (HPV)-based screening tests have been proposed for selecting patients with no gross lesion to diagnostic cancer workup, including four-quadrant colposcopic biopsies.
