Introduction: Parkinsons disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disease, characterized by motor and non-motor symptoms.Depression is the most common psychiatric complication in PD and affects about 50%of PD patients. However, the effects of traditional antidepressants on depression in PD are not ideal.Previous study has shown that Electroacupuncture (EA) could significantly improve the motor symptoms of PD model rats. Our work further explored the effects of EA on depressive symptoms of PD model rats and the related mechanisms.Method: Unilateral MFB injection of 6-OHDA was performed to set up the rat model of PD.Detect their depressive symptoms by means of behavioral tests, such as forced swimming test, sugar preference test and open field. Then, high frequency EA were given continuously for 4 weeks, and behavioral tests of each group, including motor symptoms and depressive symptoms, are observed each week. Results: (1) We have successfully established the 6-OHDA rat model of PD.By means of behavioral testing, w,e have proved that PD model rats reveal motor symptoms, accompanied by depressive symptoms, such as feeling of emptiness and hopelessness;reduced reactivity to emotional stimuli;loss of the ability to enjoy and feel pleasure (anhedonia).(2) Four weeks of 100Hz EA could significantly improve the motor symptoms and depressive symptoms of PD model rats. Conclusion:Four weeks of 100 Hz EA could significantly improve motor symptoms and concomitant depressive symptoms of Parkinsons disease model rats.
