The response of mooring chain in a mooring system has been studied in both static and dynamic ways.Normally the mooring line consists of three portions: the embedded portion, the lying portion and the suspended portion. However, most studies and commerical softwares assume the lower end of mooring chain is fixed at the mudline of the seabed and ignore the effect of embedded portion of the chain. As semi-taut and taut mooring systems are becoming more popular in deep water application, the effect of the embedded chain plays a more important role in both the static and dynamic response. For the embedded part, the tangential-and normal-force are described in different ways in clay and sand seabeds. For the suspended portion, the current drag force is determined from Morrisons equation. The chain is discreted into small elements of considerting the chain link dimension and both static and dynamic finite element analysises are conducted. The tension and the configuration of the mooring chain under pre-tension is verified staticly. In service, the floating structure is subjected to combined loads from wave, wind and current, which induces complex motions with different frequencies and amplitudes. The motions are applied at the top end of the mooring chain while the low end is embedded into the seabed at a certain depth.Static and dynamic analysises are conducted with different loads. The results are compared to evaluate the dynamic effect of the mooring chain.
