Synthesis of Mesoporous TiO2 Hybrid Inorganic-organic Ultrafiltration Membranes with Photocatalytic

  In this study,a novel inorganic-organic hybrid ultrafiltration membrane with photocatalytic activity was prepared by blending poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) with mesoporous TiO2 (M-TiO2) particles using the phase inversion method.The photocatalytic activity experiments on the M-TiO2/PVDF composite membranes were performed by photo degradation of RhB under UV irradiation at ambient temperature and pressure [1].The SEM morphologies and EDX analysis of the M-TiO2/PVDF composite membranes were observed with a Quanta 200 (FEI,Netherlands).The top surface SEM images of the M-TiO2/PVDF membranes are shown in Fig.1.All membranes exhibit that the M-TiO2 particles are uniformly distributed on the membrane surface.With the addition of M-TiO2 from 0.5 to 5 wt%,the experimental values of Ti on the top surface increased gradually (In Fig.1 right side).When the concentrations of added M-TiO2 are 0.5 wt% and 1 wt%,Ti element are uniformly distributed throughout the top surface with no Ti aggregation observed.The M-TiO2-modified PVDF membranes exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity in the degradation of the organic RhB.As shown in Fig.2,it can be seen that the degradation phenomenon of RhB increases over time.After the UV irradiation process for 120 min,30% RhB degradation occurs on P-MT-0,which can be attributed to the adsorption of polymer membrane and the self degradation of RhB.During the UV irradiation process,all of the M-TiO2/PVDF membranes clearly show greater RhB degradation compared with the virgin membrane,they are 55% (P-MT-1),61% (P-MT-2),62% (P-MT-3),and 65% (P-MT-4),respectively.Meanwhile,the photocatalytic activities gradually increase as the amount of M-TiO2 particles in the PVDF membranes increases,with P-MT-4 exhibiting the best photocatalytic performance.In this way M-TiO2-modified PVDF membrane can be applied in the treatment of untreated wastewater from industrial or agricultural processes contains organic pollutants,such as organic dyes,phenols and pesticides.
