Unlike alphabet,Chinese morphograms used in Japanese and Chinese have numerous characters that have the same pronunciation but different meanings,without orthographic similarity.To investigate the neural substrate related to phonological processing of chinese words,we conducted an experiment in which subjects were presented prime-target word pairs,which consisted of two characters.The stimulus pairs consisted of three conditions: the prime and target had the same pronunciation (SAME) or different pronunciations (DIFF),and the prime was composed of pseudo-characters (PSEUD).The paired words were presented for 100 ms and 1000 ms respectively,with a stimulus onset asynchrony of 1000 ms.The primes were phonologically same (homophone) as or different (non-homophone) from the following target words,or pseudocharacters randomly in each epoch.
