In 2006, an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) Program was introduced for colorectal resections at the Coifs Harbour Health Campus, a 200 bed hospital in northern New South Wales. This was following the concepts of Fast Track colorectal surgery described by Kehlet in 1999.The program was made possible by the involvement of a team of two surgeons and a number of registered nurses, physiotherapists, stoma therapists, pharmacists, a project and data managers and others. It comprised of a session of pre-operative education and a peri-operative protocol that insured minimal peri-operative starvation, preoperative carbohydrate and protein loading, no routine bowel preparation, minimally invasive surgery, high oxygen concentrations, normothermia, no routine use of nasogastric tubes or drains, consideration for epidural analgesia and multimodal postoperative analgesia, routine use ofprokinetic agents, early postoperative mobilization and early oral feeding.
