Microfluidic applications have proven useful for process and synthesis development within the area of organic synthesis,i.e.flow chemistry. The unique characteristics of the small scale enable for example safer and more efficient handling and production of explosive and/or toxic compounds. In this contribution, the focus is on bio-based production processes relying on whole cells(fermentation, biocatalysis)or one or several enzymes(biocatalysis).Common to most bio-based production processes is that a tremendous experimental effort is required before an economically viable full-scale process can be established. However, process development based on applying microfluidic platforms potentially enables faster and cheaper process development, for example allowing easier introduction of continuous processing aspects.
