Although a common medical complaint, syncope or the "common faint is not commonly understood.Syncope, defined as the transient loss of consciousness and postural tone with spontaneous recovery, is associated with a wide variety of medical conditions that manage to perplex and frustrate even the most astute clinician (Grubb and Olshansky 2005).The earliest description of syncope dates back to the beginning of time, when Hippocrates coined the term "syncopen"—meaning to "cut short" (Grubb and Kosinski 2002).A number of disorders can result in syncope, and researchers have separated causes into two major groups, namely cardiovascular or potentially lethal causes and the non-cardiac causes usually considered "benign" causes.
