Chronic Hepatitis C viral infection (HCV) affects around 170 millions worldwide and is the leading indication for hepatic transplantation.Egypt has one of the highest prevalence of patients with HCV worldwide.A higher prevalence of insulin resistance is claimed in this population.We studied the relation between insulin resistance, metabolic syndrome and hepatitis C in non diabetic patients and the relationship to the duration of HCV infection.This is a cross sectional study of 50 subjects; age,sex and BMI matched.Patients were divided into 3 groups, 20 controls, 15 patients with HCV for less than 10 years duration and 15 patients with HCV for more than 10 years.Patients were assessed for metabolic syndrome by guidelines of the AACE.Fasting and postprandial insulin levels were also assessed.Insulin resistance was evaluated by homeostasis model assessment (HOMA IR) equation.
