Consumers are demanding low emission vehicles and the global industry has identified Australia as a source of essential components, systems and technologies.Australia is acting nationally to tackle the complex technology problems and infrastructure issues that currently impede the uptake of low emission vehicles. For example, the federal government recently provided new funding for 5 years for the Automotive Australia 2020 Cooperative Research Centre (AutoCRC) and the State Government of Victoria is conducting a consumer trial to assess the opportunity for large-scale adoption of electric vehicles.AutoCRC is Australias centre for automotive research and it has transformed the way the industry innovates and collaborates. It has cultivated strategic international linkages, created the sector-wide supply chain development program Automotive Supplier Excellence Australia and produced the widely-acclaimed Australian Automotive 2020 Technology Roadmap.AutoCRC is a consortium of 30 international industry and research organisations and it will deliver on three key priorities identified in the Technology Roadmap ie Vehicle Electrification, Gaseous Fuels and Sustainable Manufacturing (with a strong focus on lightweight vehicle structures). The paper will discuss AutoCRCs research and education programs, and key strategies to engage industry in implementation of research outcomes.AutoCRC already has strategic relationships with Chinese companies and research organisations, and it is seeking to further expand these relationships, in an area of great opportunity for both countries.
