Synopsis A close analysis of double ionization data for particle (electron and proton) and antiparticle (positron and antiproton) impact on He, Ne, and Ar shows that the oft quoted model involving interfering first-and second-order amplitudes is inconsistent with the data.Our analysis shows that at lower impact velocities, the double ionization ratios have a linear, rather than a quadratic dependence on the impact velocity.A new model for double ionization, which involves interference between two first-order processes, shake off and TS1, is found to be consistent with both total and differential double ionization data.Our analysis implies that for Z=1 particle and antiparticle impact, the second-order double ionization process plays a minor role.
