Using genome-wide association-and large-scale replication analyses we have convincingly mapped 30 loci (17 novel) that contribute to variation in lipoprotein concentrations and created a genetic risk score consisting of nine genes to predict cardiovascular disease (CVD) (ref 1-4).Prediction and prevention of CVD are important research tasks with high potential for significant savings in terms of health spending,life years and quality of life and our challenge is to use the earlier known and novel genetic and molecular information to create panels of risk genes to be tested in epidemiological and intervention studies to improve the predictive value to the level needed for personalised medicine (risk assessment,treatment optimisation).Finally,our studies aim to contribute to better understanding of the complex interactions by which genetic (known and novel) and environmental factors (diet and physical activity) act to predispose to dyslipidaemiasand CVD.
