Gwangju downtown railway laid down as a symbol of modernization and development of the city in 1922.However,as the railway crosses the citys downtown area,it has become an obstacle to urban development in accordance with the citys growth.Local residents around the area therefore requested to relocate the railway and transform the abandoned section into a greenway park. Thus its 10.8 kilometer-long section was removed in 2000,and the abandoned rail track began to be converted into the Gwangju Greenway Park by citizens initiative from 2001.The main foci of this study are as follows. The first is to find out the necessity of urban regeneration and its desirable solution from a case study in Gwangju. The second is to examine the relocation process of downtown railway to the fringe area.It also examines the way in which the abandoned section was transformed into the Gwangju Greenway Park. The third is to investigate the significance of Gwangju Greenway Park implementation and its management from the viewpoint of sustainable urban regeneration.Greenways have numerous definition. In general, greenways are described as the ecological, recreational, social, cultural, and historical networks, corridors, trails, routes and parks.Gwangju Greenway Park is a special kind of linear park, keeping its historical and cultural heritage. Also it provides various functions such as the ecological route for pedestrians and cyclists, the recreational and tourist resources, and the nature education resource.Gwangju Greenway Park project has many positive aspects.First,it is a successful example of citizens initiative urban regeneration policy.Second,it has a special meaning as a ecological transportation mode, providing safe and pleasant walking and cycling environment.Third,it plays an important role as a node of mutual communication for residents, and as an ecological, cultural, historical, recreational and tourist resource.Lastly,it provides a good lesson as a sustainable urban regeneration policy. Its quality management and improvement owe to newly-developed creative programs with which diverse Gwangju Greenway Park coalition groups are associated.Gwangju Greenway Park has a great significance based on the residents everyday life and initiative. They are not only experienced and educated in place-making but also keep topophilia in mind, through working on the regeneration program and living a everyday life in the park.I conclusively suggest that the authentic identity of Gwangju be granted on the voluntary approach led by residents coalition and the open-ended,ever-creating residents everyday life.
