  Axially translating strings are wildly applied in engineering structures.The nonlinear behaviors of the translating strings,especially chaotic vibration and other nonlinear vibrations of the strings,have attracted great attention from the researchers and engineers in the field.Nonlinear vibration control of such strings is significant in engineering practice.However,most of the nonlinear vibration control strategies used in the field focused on single dimensional systems.In this study,an active nonlinear vibration control strategy is developed for controlling the vibratory responses of a fixed-fixed string,via a fuzzy sliding mode control approach.With the strategy,the nonlinear vibration of the string can be effectively controlled as shown in the research.Significantly,the approach of the present research shows much higher accuracy in describing the nonlinear responses of the string.A comparison between the results of the present approach and a single dimensional approach is demonstrated.The multiple dimensional approach shows significant advantages in analyzing and controlling the nonlinear vibrations of the string.It should be noticed,by the current literature,there is no control strategy available for the nonlinear vibration control of an axially translating string of multiple dimensions.
