The plant Cannabis and its extracts have long been used to treat pain. The identification of ?9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) as a major psychoactive drug and its chemical synthesis opened a new era of synthetic cannabinoids as pharmacological agents. The cannabinoid effects have been attributed to activation of cannabinoid receptors,CB1 and CB2.CB 1 receptors are highly expressed in the CNS and to some extent in immune cells, whereas CB2 receptors are primarily found on immune cells.Cannabinoid receptors belong to a superfamily of G-protein-coupled receptors. Both CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors are linked to G1/0-proteins.In addition to these receptors, endogenous ligands for these receptors designated endocannabinoids have been discovered and some examples include anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol (2-AG).
