The present study aims to investigate the difficulties Chinese EFL learners have and the situation of use of strategies when they read English, and thus put forward suggestions for future learning and teaching. Questionnaires were made to investigate: (1) students’attitudes toward the difficulties they have and strategies they use in reading of English, and (2) teachers’attitudes toward the difficulties their students have and strategies their students use in reading of English. The subjects of the study come from Sanjiang University in China. There are two findings of the present study. One finding is what difficulties Chinese students have and what strategies they use in reading of English. The other finding is what strategies Chinese students prefer to use in reading of English. The results from the study presented in this paper have made a number of contributions to the Chinese students’development of reading and Chinese teachers’teaching of reading in Chinese universities. It is further suggested that an experimental or quasi-experimental design could be used to compare the reading comprehension and use of strategies among students who receive reading strategy instruction and those who do not.
