Historical district in a city often has its own centuried cultural, historic and commercial tradition, that witnesses the rise and fall of the city as well as changes while carried on the context of urban development. Traditional commercial districts are the important elements of the traditional cultural heritage of a city. Landscape environment in the traditional commercial districts, as one of the important urban sights, is the social and economic life of the time in miniature, which reflects the level of urban politic, economy, culture and technology. Moreover, it is the real part of the people’s social life at that time.Landscape environment in the district is significant for enhancing the urban environmental quality, highlighting the historical characteristic and improving the cityscape. Nowadays, with growing attention on the protection of cultural relics and tourism development, traditional commercial district shows its unique glamour in the rush of consumer society. Therefore, a great amount of traditional commercial districts have appeared everywhere. However, owning to lack of further understanding of its historical origin and special form, it just seems to make it under the appearance of archaized clothes and tends to be formalism during the process of transformation and recovery of traditional commercial districts. Then it gets into a vicious spiral of constructive destruction which just lays special stress on the speed and quantity of landscape construction while ignores its essence of cultural reproduction and humanistic concern. As a result, the characteristic of tradition and region of a traditional commercial district is going to disappear. What’s more, the landscape environment in every city with different historical accumulations is reaching unanimity.Under thus background, from the perspective of landscape design and on the basis of traditional commercial district, I summarize the existing advantages and problems of traditional commercial district though the field investigation with theoretical analysis in this paper.According to deep thought into the existing problems, the present situation of the expression and inheritance of history context will be analysed, and then putting forward the principle, content and approach of the expression and inheritance of history context. Finally, demonstrating my advice on the development trend of traditional commercial district through case analysis. This paper is divided into7sections as follows:Section1is exordium including the significance of topic, research status at home and abroad, literature review, research content and method, research foundation and the framework of the thesis.Section2is basic theory consisted of the explanation to related concepts and the development context of traditional commercial district both home and abroad. Section3will integrate the logical relationship between traditional commercial district and history context. Section4and5will systematically introduce the content of landscape elements in traditional commercial district and history context elements, and then propose the method to solve or smooth the status quo of traditional commercial district development through landscape design.The strategy and specific attention in the landscape design of traditional commercial district will be drawn in Section6.In Section7, the expectation will be demonstrated by analyzing the cases such as Beijing Dazalan, Nanluoguxiang, Kuanzhangxiangzi and1912district. In the end, the epilogue will put forward several thoughts and innovations in the expression and heritage of history context in traditional commercial district.
