The relationship between China and the Western world is a fundamental topic. In fact, the history of Asia has been affected by a succession, a period of closure and openness towards the Western culture; this succession of moments has strongly influenced the local culture. The contemporary Chinese architecture, after the policies of the last twenty years, has opened the door to the West and to the global markets. Asian territory was the scenery of a crazy architectural development produced by Western architectural firms that have ignored the local culture trampling its theme.
Today’s institutions are pushing more and more towards a rediscovery of Chinese architectural culture, to cope with the gradual lost of identity. The necessity of a better interpretation of the “chinoiserie”, a concept often forgotten, is considered by now a priority for the Chinese architectural environment. Consequently, Western architectural firms have realized the importance of supporting Chinese culture in architecture.
The aim of this research is to focus on western designers that, even without training that belongs to Asian culture, have to reintroduce a Chinese identity in their contemporary projects on Chinese territory.
The research is divided into different sections. After a brief introduction, the second section analyses the relationship between the Chinese and Western culture in their historical evolution and its effects in architecture.
The third section analyzes the idea of contemporary architecture in China through the eyes of new generation of local architects.
The fourth section examines the complex phenomenon of the transplantation of Western architecture in China.
The fifth section analyses how the phenomenology of chinoiserie can be expressed in the project of contemporary architecture by Western architectural firms, using the idea of form, space and technology.
A case study will be analyzed, before the conclusion, as a reference point of the theoretical assumptions of contemporary practice; specifically, the French company “AS Architecture-Studio, Shanghai”, with some of the most recent projects carried out in China.
