Legal translation becomes more and more important in increasingly frequent international communications. However, theoretical study on legal translation, especially from the perspective of style, lags behind. The present study makes a tentative effort to build up a general description of the mechanism of legal style translation.One research question in this study is whether legal style is translatable. Based on the testified fact that languages have equal expressive force, a hypothesis that legal style is translatable if it is recognizable is proposed. After clarifying the definition of style and components of it, we employ devices of stylistic markers to investigate the recognizability of legal style by conducting a structural analysis of several typical legal documents. It is proved that legal style is recognizable. Then the translatability of legal style is attested from theoretical perspective and practical angle. It is also noted that this translatability has certain limitations.The other research question concerns with criteria for legal style translation i.e. how to evaluate a piece of legal translation from the perspective of style. A checklist made up of stylistic markers of legal style is postulated for the evaluation of legal style translation. It is held that one legal translation product can be regarded as successful in respect of style transferring if stylistic markers of the target language text conform to those of the source language text. A three-step evaluation process of legal style translation is demonstrated as well.The author has succeeded tentatively in recognizing the stylistic marker system of legal style, testifying the translatability of legal style, and postulating criteria for legal style translation. With these achievements, it is hoped that this thesis may shed some light on both legal translation theories and general stylistics, and may help legal translators sharpen their sensitivities to the legal language system and therefore improve the quality of their translation products.
