Growth hormone (GH) is a protein hormone produced by the somatic cells of the pituitary gland in birds and other vertebrates. The secretion of GH from poultry is controlled by the hypothalamus; it involves the release factors of the three peptide chains: growth hormone releasing factor (GRF) (promoting action), thyroxine releasing hormone (TRH) (promoting action) and growth hormone releasing inhibitory factor somatostatin SRIF) (inhibitory effect). In addition, various biological amine (including serotonin and norepinephrine) and prostaglandin groups have also been demonstrated to play a role at the hypothalamus level and possibly at the level of the pituitary gland. Among the various birds examined, the newly hatched chick plasma contained a high level of GH, whereas adult chickens and chick embryo plasma contained
