On December 1, 1999, a team of researchers from the United Kingdom, the United States, and Japan announced that they had mapped the complete sequence of the gene encoding the chromosome 22 protein. Chromosome 22 is the next-smallest pair of 23 pairs of human chromosomes. The significance of this outcome is that it is possible to find new treatments for many difficult diseases such as heart disease and schizophrenia. Dr. Michael Dexter, president of the Bowring Foundation, which provides partial funding for the study, believes that this achievement is the end of the other 22 pairs of chromosome maps.
