Conventional governors at small hydropower stations can be replaced with load regulators, which keep the overall electrical load substantially constant. One of the benefits of doing so is that the turbine can be simplified and the cost can be reduced. This article presents a design, performance, and application of an electronic load regulator that maintains the same system frequency without causing significant harmonic distortion. Recent market surveys conducted in New Zealand show that small hydropower units below 50 销 have a wide range of outlets that can both provide power away from the power grid and complement the existing power grid on the other. In the latter case, if the average tariff is used and the payback period is over 10 years, it is estimated that the total investment of a small hydropower station will not exceed 1400 NZD / 瓩 to be competitive. But that is too much for many third-world villages with abundant water resources.
