Objective To investigate whether steamed bread meal test can replace glucagon C-peptide stimulation test to evaluate islet B cell function. Methods One hundred and twelve patients with diabetes mellitus were subjected to steamed bread meal test and glucagon C-peptide stimulation test for two consecutive days. Results 1, 2 and 3 hours postprandial blood C peptide and pancreatic ascending test 6-minute C-peptide levels showed a significant positive correlation (type 2 diabetes, the correlation coefficients were 0.718,0.710,0.758, P <0.001; the correlation coefficient of type 1 diabetes group was 0.96, 0.93, 0.89 respectively, P <0.001). Conclusions Patients with contraindications to the stimulation of glucagon C-peptide may use the steamed bread test to understand the islet B-cell reserve function.
