Kate Crowned1 London 2012 Olympics Ambassador
Kate Middleton joins her husband, Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry as ambassadors for the London 2012 Olympics. The royal trio will represent Paralympics GB and Team GB at various events before and during the official Olympic Games.2 Kate’s goal will be to hype up3 the games and make them cool.
It’s the first national role for Kate. The new role is highly appropriate for Kate, who was keen on sports at school. The Duchess loved tennis, hockey, swimming, netball and rounders and was a member of several rowing teams.4
In the 1990s, she attended Marlborough College, a top boarding school5, where she played well at both field hockey and cross-country running, and was famously photographed with her hockey stick. In 2004 Kate and Prince William were photographed by the tabloids enjoying a Swiss ski holiday together at Klosters. She was famously snapped6 at a rowing practice for a competition during her brief split from Prince William in 2007. She and Prince William went rowing in Canada during their tour of the country last summer. Kate’s love for all sports makes her the perfect choice for the ambassadorship.

Kate Engaged in Charity Work
The royal family considers patronage of charities an important aspect of their social role, and frequently makes visits and attends events to boost the charities’ profiles.7 William is involved in many diverse nonprofits, while his mother, the late Princess Diana, was well known for her active support for numerous charities including organisations that helped AIDS patients.
Kate spent several months making private visits to charity organisations last year so as to make well-informed decisions about her future role. Last September, Prince William and Kate opened a children’s cancer center and the Duchess had sent a letter of support to one of the young patients receiving treatment at Royal Marsden Hospital in London. She wrote in a letter to a patient: “Despite the enormously demanding course of treatment you are undergoing, I was so touched by your strength of character and delighted to hear the news that one of your big sisters will be able to donate bone marrow8 to you later this year,” Middleton wrote. “I will keep my fingers crossed that your health goes from strength to strength over the months ahead.”9
In December, Kate and William visited a London charity for homeless youth. The Duke and Duchess joined Centrepoint youth in a healthy cooking lesson–the pair made low-fat mince piece and gingerbread, attended a talent show and watched a group session of a work preparedness program. During their visit, the royal couple teased each other and appeared affectionate10. William, who was dressed in casual clothes, even danced alongside one of Centrepoint’s residents. His playful antics brought a smile to Kate’s face.
At the beginning of this year, Kate has accepted honorary positions with some of the following charities: Action on Addiction, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, The Art Room, and the National Portrait. Additionally, she is a volunteer for the Scout Association.
“She did her own research and chose these after approaches or because they reflected the areas she was already aware of, especially in the arts and outdoor activities,” a palace source told People magazine.

Kate as Honorary Colonel of Princess Diana’s Old Army Regiment
Kate followed in the footsteps of her mother-in-law with a new military role. Soon after choosing her charity organisations, Kate was being lined up as head of Princess Diana’s old army regiment. An aide11 is reported as saying: “A final decision will be made in a few weeks but the plan to head up Diana’s regiment is advanced.”
“Kate does not want to be seen as a copycat of Diana but she likes to pay tribute12. She would take the role very seriously indeed.”
The Princess of Wales’ Royal Regiment, known as The Tigers, is the most decorated13 of all British army regiments, with 57 Victoria Crosses(a military decoration awarded for “gallantry in the presence of the enemy”), according to the Daily Mail.
Kate will also reportedly join husband Prince William and his brother, Prince Harry, in a charity partnership with the Forces in Mind Trust, which helps former servicemen and women who are having trouble adjusting to civilian life.
On top of such duties, the duchess also has a busy year ahead with the queen’s jubilee14, a major celebration of the monarch’s 60 years on the throne that will see numerous celebrations throughout Britain and the Commonwealth, peaking in a major celebration in London in early June.
The royals are expected to play a supporting role by traveling overseas to represent the Queen. William and Kate are due to journey to Malaysia, Singapore, the Solomon Islands and the tiny Pacific island of Tuvalu as part of the festivities. S
When a friend said she was lucky to meet Prince William, she said: “He’s lucky to be going out with me.”
“By far the best dressing up outfit I ever had was a wonderful pair of clown dungarees, which my Granny made.”15
When asked about her temporary split with Prince William, she said: “I think at the time I wasn’t very happy about it, but actually it made me a stronger person.”
When asked whether she wants to meet Princess Diana, she said: “Obviously I would have loved to have met her and obviously she’s an inspirational woman to look up to. Obviously on this day and you know going forward and things, you know it is a wonderful family, the members who I’ve met have achieved a lot and you know very inspirational and so, yes, I do.”
“I really hope I can make a difference, even in the smallest way. I am looking forward to helping as much as I can.” S
