美国东部时间7月26日10时39分,几经推迟的美国“发现”号航天飞机在巨大的轰鸣声中从肯尼迪航天中心发射升空。它的此次太空之旅,除运送补给等任务外,还要鼓舞美国航天被“哥伦比亚”号事故所打击的士气、重建载人航天的信心。作为美国载人航天的“独门兵器”,发现号及一系列航天飞机,在太空军事应用起到不可替代的作用。一旦太空战发生,航天飞机可作为动能武器、激光武器、微波武器的发射平台,对敌方陆、海、空、天等重要目标进行攻击;可以发现敌方卫星,对其跟踪、干扰、摧毁甚至“俘虏”;可以承担侦察监视与预警任务;也可以直接承担起作战指挥控制任务。迄今为止,美国已用航天飞机将锁眼12号光学成像侦察卫星、“长曲棍球”雷达成像侦察卫星和“大酒瓶”电子侦察卫星等许多大型军用卫星运载升空,成为美国太空战的重要工具之一。
