The patients who met the standard of brain death and those who did not reach the brain death but suffered similar injuries had normal or slightly lower level of free thyroxine and most of the patients had low level of free T_3, Reduced conversion. Low circulating T_3 levels generally indicate low intracellular T_3 levels. Thyrotropin (TSH) levels were measured in 13 patients and found that 6 were elevated, 3 were normal, and 4 were decreased. Other investigators have reported the same changes in thyroxine and TSH in brain-dead animals and in patients.
