Serum levels of superoxide dismutase (SOD) in 50 normal subjects, 17 nephrotic syndromes and 37 chronic renal insufficiency patients were determined. Results: The total SOD (TSOD) and the content of Mn-SOD in patients with nephrotic syndrome were significantly lower than those in patients without nephrotic syndrome. The levels of TSOD, Cu-SOD and Zn-SOD in patients with nephrotic syndrome were significantly lower than those in patients with nephrotic syndrome The difference was not significant, Mn-SOD was significantly increased. The results show that oxygen free radicals [O 2] play an extremely important role in kidney damage.
