Laptop computers are popular all over the world. People use them on trains and airplanes, in airports and hotels. These laptops connect people to their workplace. In the United States today, laptops also connect students to their classrooms.
Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program that allows students to do schoolwork anywhere they want. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10 million computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with laptops will also have access to the Internet. In addition, they will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates, and their families. However, the most important part of the laptop program is that students will be able to use computers without going to computer labs. They can work with it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees—anywhere at all!
Because of the many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they become more similar to desktop computers. In addition, the portable computers can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. State higher-education officials are studying how laptops can help students. State officials are also testing laptop programs at other universities, too.
At Westlake College, more than 60 percent of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow all teachers to use computers in their lessons. As one Westlake teacher said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.”

Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those used around him. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things: they learn to do without being taught to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle, compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them by himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what this word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.
If it is a matter of right answer, as it may be in mathematics or science, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine(常规) work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells us that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, and how to know what they know or do not know.
   6. According to the passage, the best way for children to learn things is by ____.
   A. listening to skilled people’s advice

   D. correct children’s mistakes as soon as possible
   9. The passage suggests that learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are ____.
   A. different from learning other skills
   B. the same as learning skills
   C. more important than other skills
   D. not really important skills

GUANGZHOU: Most residents surveyed in Guangzhou, capital of South China’s Guangdong Province, plan to hit the road for the upcoming National Day holiday but they won’t be going far.
The survey shows 71.1 per cent of the interviewees(受访者) intend to travel during the seven-day holiday, an increase of 1.2 per cent over the last year.
But 54.6 per cent of them prefer going to places around Guangzhou rather than traveling to other cities or going abroad, an increase of 1.8 per cent over last year.
“Lots of people have traveled outside during the summer vacation, and they want to escape the tourism peak also,” Wang Jian, the spokesman for the Guangdong China Travel Service Co. Ltd. (Guangdong CTS), told China Daily yesterday.
In cooperation with the Guangzhou Statistic Bureau, the Tourism Administration of Guangzhou Municipality interviewed 1,940 residents from 600 families about their plans for the National Day holiday.
“I will spend one or two days in the suburban(郊外的) areas of Guangzhou during the vacation,” said Ou Haipeng, a worker from the Guangzhou Ocean Shipping Company.
“I don’t think I can completely relax and appreciate the landscape among the huge crowds of people,” he said. “Moreover, the cost of traveling to local destinations is much cheaper.”
Even though most people prefer to stay in Guangzhou, the Guangdong CTS still saw an increase in its business, compared with the last National Day holiday.
“The newly-opened Hong Kong Disneyland made the SAR the hottest destination,” Wang said.
The survey found that about 10 per cent of the interviewees want to travel to Hong Kong and Macao during the holiday, an increase of 3 per cent over last year.
The survey also found that the hike in oil price has reduced people’s interest in traveling in their own cars.
Only 13.1 per cent of the people involved in the survey said that they would travel in their own cars, a decrease of 1.4 per cent over last year.
  14. According to the survey, the hottest destination attracting the residents in Guangzhou is ____.

   B. Hong Kong and Macao
   C. other cities in foreign countries
   D. the Hong Kong Disneyland

   A. People who want to travel to Hong Kong and Macao
   B. People who intend to travel during the National Day holiday
   C. People who would like to travel in their own cars
   D. People who intend to go to places
  16. The underlined word “hike” in the passage probably means ____.
   A. a long walk in the country
   B. a rise in the price
   C. taking off from the ground
   D. a flight in the air
  17. Which of the following is NOT the reason why the residents choose to travel to local destinations? ____.
   A. Few of them prefer to travel in their own cars
   B. Many of them have traveled far during the summer vacation
   C. They don’t want to meet up with the huge crowds of people
   D. They want to reduce the cost of traveling

Language learning begins with listening. Children are greatly different in the amount of listening they do before they start speaking, and later starters are often long listeners. Most children will“obey” spoken instructions some time before they can speak, though the word “obey” is hardly exact as a description of the eager and delighted cooperation(合作) usually shown by the child. Before they can speak, many children will also ask questions by gestures and by making questioning noises.
Any attempt to study the development from the noises babies made to their first spoken words leads to considerable difficulties. It’s agreed that they enjoy making noises, and that during the first few months one or two noises sort themselves out as particular expression like delight, pain, friendliness and so on. But since these can’t be said to show the baby’s intention to communicate, they can hardly be regarded as early forms of language. It is agreed, too, that from about three months they play with sounds for enjoyment, and that by six months they are able to add new words to their store. This self-imitation(自我模仿) leads out to deliberate(有意的) imitation of sounds or words spoken to them by other people. The problem then arises to the point at which one can say that these imitations can be considered as speech.
It is a problem we need to get our teeth into it. The meaning of a word depends on what a particular person means by it in a particular situation and it is clear that what a child means by a word will change as he gains more experience of the world. Thus the use, at seven months, of “mama” as a greeting for his mother cannot be dismissed as a meaningless sound simply because he also uses it at another time for his father, his dog, or anything else he likes. Playful and meaningless imitation of what other people say continues after the child has begun to speak for himself, I doubt, however whether anything is gained when parents take advantage of this ability in an attempt to teach new words.
  18. Children who start speaking late ____.
   A. may have problems with their listening
   B. probably do not hear enough language spoken around them
   C. usually pay close attention to what they hear
   D. often take a long time in learning to listen properly
  19. The problem of deciding at what point a baby’s imitation can be considered as speech ____.
   A. is important because words have different meanings for different people
   B. is not especially important because the change takes place gradually
   C. is one that should be ignored(忽略) because children’s use of
   words is often meaningless
   D. is one that can never be properly understood because the meaning of words changes with age
  20. The writer implies that ____.
   A. even after they have learnt to speak, children still enjoy imitation
   B. children who are good at imitating learn new words more quickly
   C. children no longer imitate people after they begin to speak
   D. parents can never hope to teach their children new sounds
