The spectacular 2000 Sydney Olympics have closed, but what impressed people is Sydney’s “Green Olympics” planning and design and public awareness of environmental protection. Sydney’s bid to host the 2000 Olympic Games proposed one of the broadest environmental programs that includes a series of commitments on environmental protection that are above the benchmarks required by the International Olympic Committee. The reason why Sydney attaches great importance to environmental protection is because the International Olympic Committee regards environmental protection as the third aspect of the Olympic spirit. Sydney’s environmental policy focuses on five areas: energy conservation, water conservation, waste avoidance and waste reduction, pollution control and protection of the natural and human environment. The main issues involved include: raw materials used in the design, construction and preparation of venues, stadium traffic, merchandise sales, public catering and waste disposal. Specifically:
