Jazz is another great piece by Toni Morrison after Beloved. Once again, the author extends his brushwork to the love story of the African American spiritual core under the historical background and rewrites a section of American history during the “Harrem Renaissance” with unique narrative techniques. The work uses Gerard Génette’s focus theory to analyze the novel’s multiple narrative skills. The narrative voice changes between zero focus, outer focus and inner focus, especially multi-type inner focus and unreliable zero-focus narration, unfurls inner world of characters, challenges the authoritativeness of traditional narrators and initiates readers’ thinking.
